What is your book about?

How seven siblings in the U.S., Germany, and Poland abandoned their ancestry in an attempt to survive assaults from twentieth-century regimes that fostered tribalism and recognized eugenics as science. Their true ethnicity remained hidden for decades from their descendants.

What inspired you to write your book?

I was investigating my family genealogy when I stumbled across clues of something I never suspected. Since I was a published historian of eastern Europe, the events were familiar, but the actors were not. They were my family I never knew.

What is a typical day like for you?

I’m a retired real estate agent, so my days now are predictably calm, focused on reading and writing. And a bit of gardening for the monarch butterflies of the world.

What do you most enjoy about what you do?

Looking back on the travels my wife and I had to unusual locations and the dear people we met and still are in contact with.

What are some favorite books you’d recommend to our readers? Karl von Loewe

Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin, Richard C. Lukas’ The Forgotten Holocaust: The Poles under German Occupation, 1939-1944, and Günter Grass’ The Tin Drum.

What advice do you have to offer our readers?

Writing and publishing a book are just two demanding stages of an incredibly challenging process whose highs are more than worth the lows.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

I was a conflict resolution specialist and trainer for my state association of Realtors®, dealing with commission disputes and ethics complaints.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on a memoir on my decade as a member of the academic precariat.
